I grew up in the Deep SouthSouth, in NW Alabama, very close to the Oakville Indian Mounds- a major prehistoric Native site in the state. As a youth, I was placed in the Indian education program and attended the Oakville Indian festivals annually, where I learned about my history and culture in a hands on and meaningful way. I’m enrolled in a state recognized tribe, the same one my great grandfather belonged to, and that connection has always felt personal to me. That connection has carried into adulthood through continued learning, respect, and community. I’m also working to learn the language with patience and humility.
