Sometimes I wish there was a town where you had to be mixed Native American just to live there. Some of us might agree that really having "white" parent and native parent, you never really feel like you fit in anywhere. You know "white" culture, but it doesn't appeal to you, and very little native culture has been instilled in you.

Experiences that we have being mixed are uncommon to both the "whites" and the natives, until now we're like our own subculture. Unlike Africans, or Indians (East), Chinese, Europeans - we have no true identity, so to speak. We live in a world where everyone has a place, but we don't really have a part of our land on either continent.

Unfortunately, we don't often see those of our "own kind" and we're forced to date/marry/associate with "whites" only. We don't meet any of mixed background to marry/date/associate with. Having been married to many years to a "white" man, there's just too much culturally, without having the culture directly, that is different. And it's enough to contribute to a high divorce rate.

I think we should have our own city.

`I get what you mean in alot of ways. I am mix like that. Got a n8tive parent and a white parent that has a tiny bite of n8tive. Personally, I feel more comfortable around n8tive. Seems like they are more honest. I am a Christian and trying to find another n8tive Christian is hard, but not impossible. I like being around n8tive more because I love the language.

`My dad is Mescalero Apache/ cahuilla
my mom is Irish/ German/Iroquois/ Norwegian/ Swedish

After being in a few s---ty relationships with white boys, my mom is urging me to find a native.
My mom thinks they are better people. More down to earth, honest, healthy...

It's soooo hard to find somebody though. They're either taken, live out of state or just aren't interested.

I totaly understand where you are coming from. I'm of mixed native heritage... My mom was Monacon, Irish and black / dad is Cherokee on his father and mother's side and black.
It's Extra hard for me... I grew up in an all black community. The only native people I ever saw where my uncles. Who knew nothing of our native culture. Native's see me as black, and black's see me as black. Like you I dont feel like I fit in with them.
I've had children by black men because there where no native men in my area at the time. Now that there are native men in DC, thy are not interested in me because they see me as black not Native. They rather date white woman. :

Prime example: I was seeing this guy when I went to school in Virgina, he was Choctaw. His mom told him he couldn't see me any more becaus I was Black. She told him that he was to marry her best friend's daughter who was Choctaw. Talk about a broken heart!

`I have seen these comments a lot in here, apologetics and hardships of being mixed decent. I was a little bothered about my own for awhile when grappling with identity at 40. But i wonder now if i was seeing it through the eyes of living in a "white" culture? Not a Native one. After moving to my partners reservation the attitude was different. Seems most people here are of some mix or another, but most are very devoted to thier culture and it never really comes up..having to explain white blood or asian or black. It's a blend but the people seem more bonded in sharing a common destiny- the future. The one with the major attitude problem here was me when i arrived. I didn't realize how easy I had it before in the life that i complained about all the time. I spent a lot of time here sleeping, crying and calling my family, complaining bitterly to my partner (now husband)- almost by the hour..i missed my high speed internet, cable t.v, family, not having stray dogs all over the yard and in the road in no hurry to move out of the way at all hours of the day, making plans for 6pm and having people START showing up at 7:30, having lots of space to move around as I pleased, etc. etc. Then I had a hard loss, and decided it was time to change my attitude. Appreciate what i have, feed hungry dogs as needed, stop being in a hurry, say dinner is at 4 if i want people to be there by 6, and love the family i have now..and actually show it. I cant change the genetics of what i was born (and dont care to), the people who matter don't give a sh@t anyway.

`a human being is a human being. i don't care what race anyone comes from. it not our decision to judge it is our duty to look at the beauty we have in our hearts & mind. my soul runs full but my heart is half & by that i mean i am Dine'/Hopi. because i am one of each, i had to face the racism of both my nations as well as the world outside my cultures. so we all have our dog days but the few that try to live the good way make it better for the rest of us. i for one want to live the good way & one day have my equal stand with me on Earth Mothers belly & feel her heart beat & the whispering of her breathe blow rainbow pollen kisses in our direction. rainbow is the reflection of the multicolored array of all human life.

Indeed, the big question of fitting in! This thread runs through all races, religions and cultures. I believe that we ALL fit in because we are brothers and sisters sharing the wealth and beauty of our great Mother Earth. This is a GIVEN and a privilege bestowed upon us simply by being born. Being a native German, I had my own issues to deal with due to the atrocities of my ancestors in a dark time of German history. However, nothing is lost as long as we remember and learn from our past and keep dear in our hearts the good that comes despite evil as long as we do not repeat but rather learn from terrible mistakes. However, seems like through the history of Man we have not learned and tend to repeat our errors. I think that is why the most of us are here at this site - we want to learn and grow so that we may feel the pleasure of just fitting in. Please all remember this: Nothing is so strong as gentleness and nothing is so gentle as true strength. We all want and deserve respect and in closing I say to whoever reads these lines, the best thing to do when losing your way, is go to the beginning. Wishing you all love, peace and inner harmony.

`That's a lovely post, and lord knows we all have had our dark days whether personal history or human history. I just feel strongly that looking in a particular group or race thinking that one will find the love they need there just because a person is Native, or white, or whatever is a false hope. I truly believe we need to live peacefully and with acceptance in our own skin 'cause one other human being cannot give that to us. A partnership is going to be what love am I giving, not what are they giving me- if we look for whose things in another we will always be dissatified. If anything our insecurities and such seem magnified when living closely with another.
''Go to the beginning'' is so true when the way has been lost.

`Sometimes i get tired of society as far as race goes. Im Navajo and grew up off the reservation with no other natives, only whites. I was always labeled as something other than my own, I have asian looking face, light skin and didn't really fit in anywhere. I am now pretty independent person, have good friends, none who are native, but do better on my own then in any 'group'. It can be hard at times, i do envy the race 'groups' because they easily accept each other because of how they 'look'. I look for that comeraderie in other Natives but because maybe I look to 'white' or something im not easily received. Now have joined a native american church and been received as a christian and get my strength from the Lord. I have gained much inner peace and trust this is how the lord wanted me to be.

`Aanii
Up here (Canada) we have a lot of lil' nooks and crannies of towns that are mainly mixed.
Metis - Means mixed blood/ half breeds..etc. so much so that Metis has aboriginal/metis rights and a very rich and vibrant culture. This was led by Metis leader Louis Riel after the government push colonization...
Metis covers alot, but predominated with Euro and Aboriginal pairings, brought on mainly by the fur trade. Even though rich in our history, there is still confusion, ignorance and animosity between our nations which are slowly being healed as we share our stories and find a common ground of pain and oppression.
Luckily we have ceremonies and celebrations that help this...National Aboriginal Achievement Awards, National Aboriginal Day, PowWow's etc.... I babble...sorry for the long post

`Wow, great post. I think you hit on a lot of the things I have gone through. But if you give it a chance, you might find yourself accepted by both sides, instead of rejected by both sides. I was not strong enough about who I was in the past and that lead to others making the decision of who I should be.

Now I feel more like I have the choice to choose whichever side I wish. Being native does not dictate the type of person I am, neither does being white. I dictate who I am.

There is a great feeling of loss of self, when we are raised white only. But now that we have control of our lives, we can reclaim that which was taken. No one can tell me I'm not native and no one can tell me I'm not white. But I will say I have been through prejudices in my own family about my non-white blood, where my native family always loved me for who I was. Maybe that is why I will always lean more towards my native side.

I don't think I could live in a city with only mixed bloods. It is only in our contrasting differences that we find out who we truely are. And that is really the root of the problem here.
