Need Cheyenne & Cherokee info

Hi my name is Susan

Im looking meet chat talk with people who can help me learn my history and heritage. Im part Cheynne through my mom Im part cherokee through my dad. any info would be great . traditions dances anything would be great. I want my kids grow up nowing there heritage I want to be able answer there ?

Cherokee.org is the official Cherokee web site. it is full of information and can guide you to other sites.

My sister is half Cherokee and we use this site all the time.

I am not familiar with the Chyenne.

There are a couple of other sites we go to. I will find them and then post them for you.

Crazycrow.com is a trading post that has dvds on dances, dresses, crafts, books. more stuff than I can write down. We buy most of our supplies from them.

Cherokeemuseum.org is a great source of info. my sister gets to go to private showings before the public gets to see them. It is hard to get her to leave the museum. They should just give her a room there. giggle

Her best friend is a Cherokee Clan Mother and together they do a lot of good for the Cherokee.

My sister is known at the TN govenors office as the emailer from hell. Everyone knows my sis!

these sites are a good start. When I talk to my sis tomorrow I will ask her for more information. She has a lovely way with words.

An excellent source of information is the book Native American Myths and Legends compiled byRichard Erdoes and Alfonso Ortiz. I dont know why I did not think of it sooner. It has myths and legends of all the Tribes. It is 525 pages of wonderful stories. If you want to learn about a people read their myths and legends.

The movie Dreamkeeper has several of the myths in it. Excellent movie. It is a Native American movie and oh is it wonderful to watch.

Coyote and Wasichu

There was a white man who was such a sharp trader that nobody ever got the better of him. Or so people said, until one day a man told the wasichu "There's somebody who can outcheat you anytime, anywhere."

"That's not possible," said the wasichu. "I've had a trading post for many years, and I've Cheated all the Indians around here."

"Even so, Coyote can beat you in any deal."

"Let's see whether he can. Where is Coyote?"

"Over there, that tricky-looking guy."

"Okay, all right, I'll try him."

The wasichu trader went over to Coyote. "Hey, let's see out outsmart me."

"i'm sorry," said Coyote, "I'd like to help you out, but I can't do it without my cheating medicine."

"Cheating medicine, hah! Go get it"

I live miles from here and I'm on foot. But if you'd lend me your fast horse?"

"Well, all right, you can borrow it. Go on home and get your cheating medicine!"

well, friend, I'm a poor rider. Your horse is afraid of me, and I'm afraid of him. Lend me your clothes: then your horse will think that I am you."

"Well, all right. Here are my clothes: now you can ride him. Go get that medicine. I'm sure I can beat it!"

So Coyote rode off with the washichu's fast horse and his fine clothes while the wasichu stood there bare-assed.

The Gnawing

There is a great pole somewhere, a mighty trunk similar to the sacred sun danc ploe, only much, much bigger. This pole is what holds up the world. The Great White Grandfather Beaver of the North is gnawing at that pole. He has been gnawing at the bottom of it for ages and ages. More than half of the pole has already been gnawed through. When the Great White Beaver of the North gets angry, he gnaws faster and more furiously. Once he has gnawed all the way through, the pole will topple, and the earth will crash into a bottonless nothing. That will be the end of the people, of everything. The end of all ends. So we are careful not to make the Beaver angry. That's why the Cheyenne never eat his flesh, or even touch a beaver skin. We want the world to last a little longer.

Black Lodge Singers
The Black Lodge Singers of White Swan, Washington are one of the most respected pow-wow groups in North America. Headed by Kenny Scabby Robe of the Blackfeet, the Black Lodge Singers are largely drawn from his twelve sons. In demand as a host drum at pow-wows around the United States and Canada, Black Lodge has released twenty albums for Canyon Records including an album of pow-wow songs composed specifically for children. They also contributed tracks to Ancestral Voices, a 1994 Grammy Awards finalist by R. Carlos Nakai and William Eaton. Several of the Black Lodge Singers are noted for their prolific songmaking, each year creating new pow-wow songs that quickly become popular throughout the pow-wow circuit.
