I seem to be laboring under a misconception about the meaning of the
term "Warrior".
Evidently mistaken, my understanding of it's definition was based on a
seemingly archaic traditional interpretation whereby I thought it to mean an individual-a man-whose purpose in life was to defend and to nurture and sustain not only his culture but a way of life also 24/7.
Imagine my embarrassment when seeing how wrong I was as evidenced by the liberal self-application of it I see here where it becomes little more than a false
claim based solely on DNA or some equally feeble claim accompanied by
the long winded flattery of a fool telling us all what a tough guy he is.Pathetic
and sad.
There are some Warriors on this site- you can read it in their profile if you
look deeply. Heres a hint-they are the ones not trying to convince anyone
that they are.
A Warrior has a few knots on his head and scars-both internally and externally from service to his people. He respects his nations women-he tends and honor the Elders and views all children as a sacred trust. And he will go the distance for his culture-hes not interested in the slow assimilation of Nike, Hip Hop or whazzup-He is a Warrior, and to him that is enough. His life is not his own but rather belongs to his nation.
He's not interested in counting coup on his nation's women or "scalp hunting" them to hang as idle boast from his lodge pole-he is a father and provider to his children, not leaving them and the woman who bore them for the next foray.
If you want to talk the talk then have the grace and dignity to honor the collective history of warriors by walking the walk also.

`i agree mostly of it. my dad was a warrior and i tend to call my self one , i do not feaar death and fight for my people , my life means nothing compared to my people and i am gladly willing to die for those i call my brothers and sisters ,many do not know nowadays what a warrior means , many think its all about fighting , but a true proud warrior does not care about his riches and what he has accomplished in life , a true warrior is there to defend what is most precious to him and fight for that where others cannot , your people , theyre rights , theyre lives , a warriors life means nothing , its meraly there to help others to reach goals and help them out , to ensure that your brothers and sisters will have a good life without worries and in happiness , (in short . the protection of our culture and to make sure it wont fade away). or so thats how i am raised :)

Hi ibelieve, I am in agreement with you. Too many people say they are warriors but for the wrong reasons. A true warrior will fight for his people, with his people, respect women, be there for his woman and children. I may not have been raised a Native American but for me they are my people and am proud to stand by them no matter what.
Treat the earth well,
It was not given to you by your parents,
It was loaned to you by your children.

`Yes i care to comment- especially to those from other countries and cultures. To what do you owe your knowledge of the Native warrior and feel that your comments may stand on a par with his? Is it from books of euro HIS-tory that espouse the native ways or claim to revere the 'noble savage'? As a native woman, I cannot lay claim to fully understand the mind and heart of our male warriors, so how can those who do not understand our ways profess so adamantly as to the right/wrong of those who claim warriorship?
I do not mean to insult or demean anyone- I just ask the difficult questions so that I may be enlightened and thus better serve my people.

`Actions speak louder than words..for those that lay claim to being a warrior. Bearing,Courage,Dependability,Endurance,Integrity,Judgment,Tact,Unselfishness,Loyalty. These are just a few qualities required and even harder to follow 24/7. Big shoes to fill no doubt, but it would go well with the saggy pants to top off that clown appearance!

`Fascinating! I'm one of thos knuckleheads. Served the country and grew up on the reservation and getting into fights on a yearly basis to see who the big cheese was. Scars, its like an armband and pathetically, thats all I knew. Clans against clans, thats the way it always was. Apache life, I wonder sometimes, maybe to have become a medicine man. I am older now and see things slightly different now. Yes, you become more social and realize that there are plants to nurture and kids to help. FatherTime has come and made me soft. Big steps, yes, traditional.....sometimes....Mother always wanted her kids to learn the White ways....sucks!! I learned Apache language first and then they mess with your head. It seems like you will always have someone telling you what to do or think. Not anymore, but yeah...you got it right...I think, Medicine man shoes are hard to fill....me, I always wanted to be free and I know I'm happy. Only way to be warrior in my tribe is to be a bada**! It has never changed....leads me to wonder.

` My invisible Worriers.
I grew up with Worriers, but not all were men. I look at the life of the women who came before me and marvel at their strength, in heart, mind, body and soul. As a desendent of these women most of my decision are base on them and ask myself does my actions bring shame to them. Friends say the devil sometimes leads us to do wrong. My reply to them is he has no hold on me along with the Creator I have my Worriers (grandmothers & others) who stand between him and me. Of course they do not understand or believe me, but as long as I know they are there I will always be protected, loved, and have pride in who I am. A Worrier is one that although has left this world they are remembered for his/her spirit.

`Why does a warrior have to be male as wasn't there some women (I have been busy reading since joining this site)that also used to fight when they were required too?

`I would say there were a lot of women warriors they are always forgotten about
Throughout history war and fighting have been seen as men's activities, however women have always been involved in battles and sieges, not to mention duels, prizefights and so on.
The most common occasion on which women would take part in battles was when their home, castle or town was attacked. A medieval lady would have expected to take charge of defense in her husband's absence.
Some exceptional women like Boudiccia and Joan of Arc also led attacking armies.
There were also a few women disguised themselves as ordinary soldiers or sailors in armies through the ages.

`Queen Boudicca ruled the Icini tribe in Britain at a time the Romans invaded the island. The Celtic queen gathered an army of over one hundred thousand do drive the Romans out. The warriors following Queen Boudicca included both men and women. She attacked the towns under enemy rule and slaughtered the inhabitants. When she faced a great battle against the Romans, her army became caught between the enemy and the chaos of carts, milling horses, and cattle. Her army was slaughtered.
Woman Gladiator
Women Gladiators were common from the time of Nero until 200 AD. They owned the finest weapons and trained diligently at martial arts. Some came as slaves hoping to win their freedom; while others were upper class Roman women looking for excitement.
