Microsoft Office now offered in Quechua

Microsoft Peru presented it's "MS Office" program in Quechua for the first time this weekend to students in Pisac, a district of the Inca's ancient capital, Cusco.

The students of the National School 'Bernardo Tambohuacso' seemingly explored and handled the translated software package with ease and the creators of the project were satisfied with the results and feedback.

The young users confessed to have some difficulties in the beginning, but their enthusiasm predicts that in just a short time they will be able to dominate tools like Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Of course the Internet is most attracting, especially the chat rooms, but others also see it as a possible source of work.

A couple of students said that the only problem is the keyboard, because it seems a little complicated to quickly find the correct letters.

School director, Abel Yarahuamán, explained that most of students are not computer savvy because they have to work the fields and are used to their farming tools and they cannot afford buying their own PC.

One of the disadvantages for spreading the software in quechua is that this language is spoken in very poor areas where schools don't have computers, or if they have them, they are old and no longer sufficient. Aware of this weakness, Guido Pilares, representative of the Ministry of Education and specialist in bilingual education, makes it his goal to expand supply, equipment and infrastructure.

The translations were developed by eight Quechua speaking students from the national universities of Cusco and Ayacucho. MS Office was chosen as the first product and the whole Windows operation system will follow.

"The last phase of this project is to instruct teachers in educating young scholars in new technologies, said Microsoft Peru Education Manager Marushka Chocobar and added that the company is now working on Quechua translations for all the material needed for a sufficient education.
