[ìAlaska's congressional representative [Don Young] is pushing for
legislation that would give more than 1 million acres of federal land to
the corporation that represents Alaska Natives living outside the state.
The other 12 regional corporations were formed to manage the 44 million
acres and more than $962 million Alaska's indigenous peoples received
under the 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. Natives living outside
Alaska created the 13th corporation several years after the act's passage
and received no land. The bill allows the 13th corporation to select land
that has not been already claimed by other Native corporations or the
stateÖYoung, who held a hearing on the bill this week, said legislation to
amend the act is ëlong overdue.í The two conservation units open to
selection would be the Steese National Conservation Area and the White
Mountains National Recreation Area, both managed by BLM and located just
north of FairbanksÖî]

[Museum officials and developers say they will meet with members of the
Catawba Indian Nation and historic preservationists to discuss the best
way to proceed with a 350-acre development planned in Fort Mill, [South
Carolina]. The decision comes amid concerns that the land containsÖ[18th
century] burial grounds that should be preserved. York County Culture &
Heritage Museum officials say they know of no burial grounds on the land.
But archaeologists and tribal leadersÖsay there has never been a concerted
search effort. In an e-mail sent Monday to York County councilmen and
museum staff, the museum defended its actions and said leaders know of no
ësubstantiatedí burial grounds on the propertyÖThe letter says the museum
invited archaeologists from other institutions, including the Catawbas, to
visit the site. But [Catawba tribal historical preservation officer
Wenonah] Haire says the Catawbas have never been formally invited to
participate in the fieldworkÖî]
