TO be honest, when I was a little boy without much character I was known in cree as "the little fat one". My mother stills calls me that ---much to my chagrin-- but what can I do. I picked the name eveningson and hope like heck nobody from down home reads it because they would say "weehow... now what is the "little fat one" thinking now even though I am no longer little, and while off my prime, not fat.....I could not live it down.... humour in indian country can be cutting that way.... there is usually a double meaning in names given by others.... like he who dances with wolves was actually a name given to the cavalry officer who was, to the sioux, a little bit crazy to them. Who after all, in their right mind, would dance with wolves?
