interesting 'conversation' here. and a lot of what is said is exactly why i am opposed to mixing, even tho mixed myself. i know that sounds 'bad' or something but it is just all confusing and i dont think everyone being the same and one big blend is the answer either. i dont care to rehash this again here but just briefly on my point in case any misunderstand..my grandpa ("Sioux" as he identified himself), adopted along with his younger brother, believed very vocally about the importance of assimilation. the way he spoke of it was that he believed it was important for survival and to have a 'comfortable' life--but they both drank thenselves to death, and he always struck me as a, kind, but deeply unhappy man. so that was kind of confusing for me growing up (if it's so great why are you so miserable, ya know??) the way i was raised being mixed native, jewish, norwegian was 100% an ethnic identity and had not one bit anything to do with spiritual beliefs at all. i am not saying that is right..it is just how it was. and in the jewish community that was absolutely reinforced..one dosen't have to even believe in any 'God' to be jewish--you are because it came down from your mothers line. of course people convert..but they just are not usually accepted as jewish no matter how strong thier spiritual beliefs. not 'right'? but its just a fact of what they'll face. I am only putting all this out there as example based on MY experience..and I dont think I will again...and i am not asking anyone to agree, in fact i am not even saying it is right..it just is. i understand about ones ancestors and i do think about my ancestors..i do wonder how hard it was for my grandpas mother to lose her children..i have lost one myself..i see her eyes when i look in the mirror. i also think of the ones who weren't able to get out of northern germany. my answer..right or wrong..my children aren't raised in a "religious" atmosphere. i am ambiguous about my own spiritual beliefs sooo..? what i even get confused about is how they identify themselves and we ALL get confused about that..even my relatives. My daughter looks absoluely absolutely Native American..when people look at her thats what they see, so does she. But i have 2 boys that are white as white in appearance and they are all full blood siblings..then my oldest son..came off the plane to live with me..i hadnt seen him in awhile..standing there with my daughter we seen him and it didnt 'click' with either of us that was him in an instant and i was like "oh hey look at that Jewish guy." (i can spot them a mile off and not usual to see them on the 'Plains') then i realized 'omg! thats my son!' I even said "god S--, what happened you look like Richard Dreyfuss without the beard!" and he laughed. So what I am saying here is I have 4 children...with 3 separate eithnic identities that they separately have identified themselves with based on how they are veiwed by PEERS and who they see when they look in the mirror. I am not saying here this is right..i am only doing the best i can to navigate all this. maybe i am screwing them up and one day my two boys with green eyes and blond hair will end up on NAP complaining about being mixed race and that they were jipped of thier Native identity? Being mixed can be something of a quagmire that we do our best to find our core in i guess.
P/S: i'd like to add that as far as identity goes with my children (before there's any misunderstanding) i can only foster in my children so much..but the fact is that they just simply have different EXPERIENCES in thier interaction with people in society based on obvious physical appearance. and there is nothing i can do about that, but it goes a long way into how they view themselves in this world.

`too much drama not enuf happiness....goto ancestry dot com or something like that. you can get an abstract of census from your tribe to break down your lineage...dont say i never gave out no helpful info now. im jus kidding!

`personally i am fine with who i am, i dont suffer any 'identity crisis'..my spiritual beliefs is more what i struggle with..sooo, i wont be found dancing with wolves or wearing a yarmulke or even a metal pointed hat with horns on it sailing the northern seas looking for the next continent to raid. i'm just sitting back raising my kids self supporting and enjoying not watching my hair melt in the humidity.
no drama..just one personal experience in many out there.
