I have a friend that's Colville, nez perce and sioux decent but he can only take the colville as his tribe which really doesn't make any sense in my book.

Also I have read though not sure if it still applies but not all native americans are classes as USA citizens if they live on a reservation. They are granted some special thing that says they can stay because there have the heritage of the first americans but not and american citizen....is it true and wheres the logic in it?

It does make sense because the colville is probably the only one in which his blood quantum has enough for. Most, not all, reservations require 1/4 blood.

EVERY native american living in the united states that is not canadian is an american citizen by birth or if their old enough by being granted citizenship. The government basically gave indians citizenship as a reward for winning the first world war for them, lol.

John, it still doesn't make sense to me but then I'm european I suppose. Why cannot those that have a mix of tribes within their blood not say they are from all those tribes....why do they have to limit themselves to just one. It's like me saying....oh I'm just english...when I have more Irish blood in me and a little french. It's like saying i'm not allowed to mention the Irish and French heritage.

Another thing I have read...also not sure if it's true that certain tribes only allow the quatum from either the mothers or fathers linage. So what happens say if you mother was european and your father was from say another tribe and also say your only allowed to take your heratige from your mothers side? That sounds so unfair to me that if what I read is right you cannot say you have any of the tribe that is say in your fathers blood...

Sorry if I sound stupid but like I said I'm trying to understand the politics of it all

`I am not Johnmarlon but just a thought again.. I believe he was referring to Tribal ENROLLMENT. Other than that people say they are from or are whereever or whatever. There are certain benifits to being enrolled in a tribe and I think the Tribes are just doing what they can to prevent an identity c----erf*ck...and bring some order to this.
The Jews went through this a few thousand years ago (to current)..they just have a strict rule now..Bloodline comes from the mother your Jewish..if it comes from the father only-you are not. There are those who dont like this but it was the way of them to get order to this back in the day I guess. And it dosent matter a lot here in the U.S..it only affects them when they go to Israel as a I.D is required there and they wont be able to identify as Jewish..only muslim or Christian....so some feel pretty burned...and they have written entire books on thier feelings about it.

But the blood quantum issue is a fairly recent (as far as global history goes) issue for Native Americans so it's confusing sometimes. But they sure didnt invent it. (lol???)no.

For one, being European has nothing to do with a lack of knowledge in the area of Native American politics, lol. I would bet Europeans know more about Native's here than the non-natives that live here right next to Natives.

I was referring to blood quantum in reference to tribal enrollment. Someone can be self proclaimed anything, anywhere in America or elsewhere. A person is only limited to one reservation because of blood quantum (not 'tribe'.. since a tribe can have many reservations.) I'm not sure if there are any reservations that allow multiple enrollments, I would guess none but perhaps there may be a few since there are so many reservations.


I've no clue about that second question you posted in what I quoted. I've never really heard about tribes recognizing a specific parent only when it comes to enrollment. I have heard of it in terms of clan recognition though. You're getting into a complex area which would be better researched lol.

Well by now you will know I ask complicated questions but it's better to ask than not and would be greatful if anyone can suggest good online reading on that second matter. I was just curious as I have another friend from the netherlands whose mother and grandmother have some degree of cheyenne in their blood and it was actually something he mentioned. He's a shaman but was told by his grandmother and the reservation that she lived on that he coudn't practise unless the blood quatum rules or something or it was proved he had the correct blood and had to go via his mothers line only. So from what I gather both him, his mother and sister had a blood test and now he's allowed to practise.

Sorry for me blaming being european and yes your probably right in that we may know more hehehe! I just have been reading and invading the net and was just a case of asking questions that I have to some of the things I have read or been told.

I'm trying not to sound stupid but some things just sound really complicated and half the time I cannot understand the logic behind the action that was done at certain times throughout history. I suppose I was hoping someone somewhere would help me understand but I suppose sometimes there just is no answer...
