Yesterday, my oldest son called to tell me the college was sponsoring "Native American Week" and if I could get over there, they were dancing. I grabbed up the little boy and we zoomed up. Thor is autistic and has a real sensitivity to sounds. You never know what will set him off. I really half expected him to freak out over the drums and want to come home.
I was SO WRONG!! He was dancing the instant his feet hit the pavement! He kept saying "Get closer" he was up to dance as soon as the drums would start. He was into everything and everyone. Hugging Miss Native America. He was HOME. He knew he belonged there!
He found turquoise necklaces for sale and told me he HAD to have one. I did get it. He had me hang it over his bed lastnight and told me it would "keep me safe". I was amazed. He KNEW who he was, without ever being told. He knew where he came from.
I just had to share this. It touched my heart deeply!!

Sounds like you guys had a good time. Glad to hear it. =)
I'm not one to take words literally so I want to clarify with a question..
You did tell him his mother was Native right?
(not trying to sound negative but your words got me curious)

`You know John, with all the other stuff I must struggle with for this boy, telling him his heritage didnt occur to me. Sounds stupid now that I think about it. But it is a challenge to get him to attend while you talk. You have to keep things short and direct. The fact that mama was apache never really occurred to me. The older boys know. The oldest one rebels against it, saying I will never prove it legally and so he chooses the scottish highlander over the Apache warrior. It hurts me, but it is his choice.
Maybe I was afraid to tell Thor. His father is Finn/Swede. Thor may be part Sami. But I have never talked to him about it because he is only 6 and life has been a little bit difficult for us both. I think I never thought about telling him, not because he couldnt understand, but because I didn't think about it much.
It is hard to express clearly. But when you are working on getting your child to eat more than just chips or cheetos, and trying to convince him that potty training is good stuff... a lot of other things never seem to matter. Does that make sense? But he knows now, and I feel he has always known in a way.

Hi Ravenwoman
I can relate to you as my six year old grandson has moderate Autism. Any diviation from his normal routine will set him off. My situation is the publics reaction to him. I get some horrible looks and mean comments when out. I find myself having to make excuses and sometimes feel embarrased. He loves to go up to some and say hello and you would think that he had cursed them out
We are both Black and Native American and often have to deal with narrowmindness.Recently when started attending a Native American Church and he fell right into step His teacher has a way with him and he is learning some of the culture. For this I am grateful

`I heard a story about a woman who had a son with autism. One day, she purchased RELIV NOW for KIDS herbal nutritional supplement vitamin powder can. She mixed it with fruit drink or milk or whatever. Her son drank it twice everyday. His autism was gradually reduced by 89 percent. Now he is talking! Now he is using more words everyday! Is that great?
If you want to know more and maybe buy one that meets your specific needs. They have products for joint pain, to reverse aging, lose weight, and prevent heart disease. You can google the official RELIV website located in Missouri. It's awesome! If you have a child with autism, check it out!!!!!
