I found this over a year ago and I treasure it. This is what i am looking for in a mate. This touched my heart.
~ The Invitation ~
By Oriah Mountain Dreamer (an Indian Elder)
It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.
It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain!
I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself, if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own self.
I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy. I want to know if you can see beauty even when it is not pretty everyday, and if you can source your life from God's presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon,"Yes"!
It doesn't interest me where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children.
It doesn't interest me who you are, how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

Hi
I have Oriah Mountain Dreamer's book, "The Invitation" and SHE IS NOT a Native Elder. She is a white woman who lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and was raised in a small town in northern Ontario. Her writing is beautiful and she does acknowledge the "grandmothers" who have worked with her.
Just wanted to clarify that point.

`Such words are from the soul. I answer with one of my favorite quotes.
"The spoken word contains a life of its own, an endless life. The spoken word does not fall to the ground, shatter and turn to dust. The spoken word is born, takes flight and lives forever, always ready to be recalled if need be. And when words have the value of immortality, one is careful not to use them haphazardly or falsely. A word is power in and of itself. It comes from nothing into sound and meaning, it gives origin to all things. Only by means of words can man deal with the world on equal terms. and the word is SACRED!

.I haven't been raised with our native ways at all, just recently found out that I had Cherokee in my family, but I'm really looking to get in touch with my people and learn all I can. |

.You should contact the Cherokee offices and tribal rolls and give them information on your family tree to see if they can track down your relatives. |

`Hey there, I'm new to this site. Warm greetings to all. Wow what a small world it is sometimes when you're in the flow and on the same wavelength as another soul/souls. I live in Australia and do not have Native American in my blood, but it has for as long as I can rember been in my soul. That very "Invitation" is sitting right in front of me on my desk. I've had it for years and only just 'accidentally' came across it yesterday when I was looking for something else. Yes such words (as riverotter said) "are from the soul", therefore the source is not as important as whether 'your truth that lies within' resonates with it.
Riverotter thank you for sharing your favourite quote. It has just become my new favourite quote.

re:Riverotters' comment/quote
And what is word knowledge
but a shadow of wordless knowledge?
Your thoughts and my words are waves from a sealed memory
that keeps records of our yesterdays...
