cloud walkers

we were once cloud walkers, you and i

choosing to live among the people of the sky

floating on the feathers of the heart

raised by the wind in the trees

dancing with the eagles, reaching out to touch the stars

like the porcupine, you chewed the bark around my soul

and exposed what was inside, like nobody else could

we explored each other, like the deep forests, early in the morning

we tasted the pure waters, breathed the fresh air of spring

we held on to the sunshine, bathed in moonlight so many nights

but then the rains came and washed everything away

the floods made muddy what was once green and untouched

and now the badger digs and cannot find its home

the fawn bleats for its mother, but the doe has run away

the wanton hunter comes, and divides them

like a wolf that chews the bones, but discards the meat

all is wasted...

so now i sit like a lonely rock

unmoving...

ignoring those that come to rest on me

not sharing in their laughter

enduring the summers, waiting for the blankets of snow

to hide me, so no-one else will know

how we were once cloud walkers

you and i...
