`Anyone willing to preach about Jesus at and during native american ceremonies and other going ons pertaining to native american culture should be ashamed of them selves. If they sat down to think about what the "holy Christians" did to native Americans by sending them to horrific boarding schools, forcing them to forget their culture and their language, beating it out of them, killing, raping, ing them, I'm sure they'd think twice about mixing the two.

`"holy Christians" have been the cause for genocide the world over since the beginning of Christiandom. Jesus...cool dude...that whole Christ gig....over-rated and misunderstood (IMHO). To be perfectly honest. I would never attend a "christ-centered" pow wow and in fact would be rather irritated to mistakenly happen upon one, in all honesty. There are plenty of places to go "get your Jesus on". I wouldn't question a bunch of buddhists about where to find "Christ-centered" social (Buddhist) gatherings. Why is it you cannot just be Christian and enjoy the diversity of culture and different spiritual belief systems for what they are? Why must "Christians" come CHRIST everything up in order to feel all fuzzy when they attend? If you need Christ centered functions.....ATTEND CHRIST CENTERED CHURCH GATHERINGS.
Just sayin....

`Bluebird 73, just in case you still read this as visitor, or back under a different name.. '1910 Indian Shaker Church'. is very active in Canada, Pacific Northwest, and Northern California. it's shaker, not as in east coast Shakers, but as the members "shake" during some ceremonies and such is where that name comes from. close knit loving group of people who didn't abandon thier Native beliefs, ceremonies, or language just because they now believe John Slocums vision over 100 years ago. wikipedia classifies them as a "messianic cult" but seems anything that isn't mainstream and fundamental has that label unfortunately. Good luck to you

The wiser approach is to separate Christ from Christianity. "They did" is not tantamount to "We do" unless we do, and from where I sit, we don't. A chip on the shoulder automatically renders the bearer of the chip weaker than the object of his hate. Was is past. Is is present. We are hardly immutable. "Jesus Christ: the same, yesterday, today & forever." We want respect. We forgive. Our ancestors--long ago acted as they did for their reasons which, in retrospect are easily criticized. We act now, in dignity if we don't want to be seen as a pitiful, snivelling lot as are certain ethnic groups. Quiet, dignified, gracious are powerfully attractive; when we are these qualities, we are powerful. Let's not blame Christ for Christianity. The premise you state is false, so the argument can never stand. You create and perpetuate hate when you could more easily foster acceptance and harmony. It's far less the strain. I don't worry about Jesus's take on pow wows. God-He has the all-encompassing mind. You see the pettiness with which we allow ourselves to be shrunk. I surely don't want to sound heavy-handed. I simply am a Christian with a Cherokee father and I'm a woman who loves a good and a well-formed argument. Thank you for the forum and for letting me participate.

`in have to agree, Jesus cannot be blamed for Christianity, or horrors committed in the name of Jesus...if we honestly look at history, the same religious/government engine that committed and still commits atrocities in the name of their god or the name of Jesus, was the same machine that killed Jesus (or attempted to, depending on what you are inclined to believe) to begin with...they were however so brazen and disrespectful that they took his name without his permission and twisted it into something it was never meant to represent...and so to this day immediately we associate Jesus with the religious death cult that was created and emblazoned with his name...but that cult is not him, nor does it really truly represent what he was about...i think Jesus was in reality much more like a native, he was a nomad for much of his life, he lived off the land much of the time, but was not too good to participate in the customs of the people, because it was about the people, not about their customs...it was about his loved ones and friends, not about their religious leanings...or lack thereof...
he was a master psychologist, a good person, humble, and a hard worker, who was wise beyond his years...and i bet there are many elders out there who fit the same description...without taking the title from a religion...
there is nothing wrong with gaining wisdom from Jesus actions, but that doesn't mean one has to adopt the doctrines of a church...or a label...
