For those of you who don't know (I certainly didn't prior to yesterday), there's a procedure offered at many European salons, and now in the states, called Ear Candling. It uses heat from a candle to create suction in the ear canal. The supposed end result is the removal of wax and other debris from the ear.
The salon owner who told me about it said, "it's actually a Native American procedure... if that sort of stuff interests you." "That sort of stuff" does indeed interest me, so I did some browsing around online.
The technical term for the procedure is Thermal Auricular Therapy, but it is now being referred to as Hopi Ear Candling. One website claims the technique dates back to ancient Greece, then migrated to America, "where native American Hopi Indians used it widely" [1]. According to the Hopi Cultural Preservation Office, however, no such procedure was ever used by the Hopi tribes [2].
So my question to all of you is this: Have any of you ever heard of this remedy used within a tribe? Or do you feel "Hopi" was attached to the name, simply to appeal to alternative medicine fanatics like myself?
